Wantage and Grove

Wantage Town Council Independent Advice Centre for Wantage, Grove & District

They decided to call our Wantage Civic Hall by a new name – ‘The Beacon’! What a piece of grandstanding!  The problem with the Civic Hall / Beacon was not its name but the high room hire rates and the high cost of food and drink. This is meant to be a facility and meeting place for everyone.

Tories and Lib Dem Councillors have made no progress on the lighting of the Willow Walk Brookside footpath in Wantage despite Jean Nunn-Price pointing out the danger to school children and older people walking home from the A338 bus stop to the Witan Way estate on dark winter evenings when the area is pitch black, and the path is hard to make out.  When it snows the unlit path is doubly dangerous as there is no differentiation between the path and the brook itself.  Another Tory and LibDem failure.

The Wantage/Grove LibDem county councillors failed to stop Thames Travel from cutting its bus service to Grove, badly affecting workers needing to travel to Harwell and Milton Park, as well as schoolchildren travelling from Grove estates to Wantage and Didcot.  This despite a 300-names petition from local people submitted to the County Council by Grove Cllr Jean Nunn-Price.

The developers are swarming all over our town and village – sticking yet another new estate outside the present residential perimeter.  Apart from the massive airfield development, there’s Crab Hill, Monks Farm, Stockham Farm Fields, and so on.  But what people actually want first is improved infrastructure – that’s schools, roads, health services, buses, shops ….  What’s there is already insufficient for the current population, so what’s going to happen when the developers have made their millions selling the properties they’re building, do you think they’re going to provide all the infrastructure that’s needed?  No, we don’t think so either. We shall continue as your local Labour representatives to push for infrastructure BEFORE property development – that’s schools before houses, roads before houses, health centres before houses, buses before houses …. you get the drift.
