It was an early start this morning by colleagues from Wantage as well as Didcot and Faringdon to support Rachel on the street stall in the Market Place today. From the start local residents were interested in what Rachel and the Labour and Co-operative Party had to say about the many issues concerning them. Rachel was able to describe what 'for the many not the few' meant in Wantage.

Following on from last night's strong presence at the Grove Hustings, Rachel was well received in Didcot in an equally packed hall. In response to some robust and passionate questions Rachel described what Labour intended to do for the many on important issues such as the economy, health and education as well as describing Labour's solid attitude to policing and defence. Labour consistently supports children and young people as well as less well off and vulnerable people and this provided the opportunity to challenge other candidates on their record/stance on these important policy areas. Putting the spotlight of the electorate on government shortcomings and their real intentions for education, health and energy was very revealing.

Wantage Hospital bed closures and withdrawal of rehabilitation and palliative care has been blamed on Legionella, but the real culprit was lack of funding. Our Tory MP opposed Labour’s National Health Service Bill which would have restored political accountability whilst  claiming to support the NHS. The NHS is on life support but he said 'Government has actively supported the NHS' and 'each day there are more operations, more people seen in A&E within four hours and more people accessing mental health services'. Similar rhetoric is repeated nationally by the Secretary of State for Health and our Government, all of whom are out of touch.
